SeaWorld releases green sea turtle back into the ocean

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A green sea turtle rescued from the Oregon coastline and returned to health by animal care staff at SeaWorld San Diego was returned to the ocean Wednesday.

The 150-pound turtle was discovered in June -- dehydrated, nearly comatose and suffering from exposure to cold water and injuries to its shell -- and stabilized at the Oregon Coast Aquarium.

"Koa" was later flown to SeaWorld San Diego aboard a Navy aircraft that was flying a training mission.

Warmer water conditions in the Pacific Ocean off the coast allowed for Koa's return, according to SeaWorld.

Park officials said green sea turtles are considered to be a threatened species. SeaWorld has rehabilitated more than 450 marine mammals, sea birds and turtles so far this year.
