"Home for the Holidays" pet adoption drive kicks off

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The Helen Woodward Animal Center kicked off the Iams Home for the Holidays pet adoption drive Friday.

Rescue groups from all over the county gathered with some of their adoptable pets.

Organizers say they'd like to encourage shelters to keep their doors open during the holidays so people who are looking for a pet won't go to puppy mills or pet stores.

"I think there's a misnomer, people believe that rescue facilities have damaged, undesirable pets and every single day we see beautiful animals come through our doors," Jessica Gercke of the Helen Woodward Animal Center said.

Phoenix the kitten was also at Friday's event. He is recovering at Helen Woodward after he was abandoned earlier this month at a Los Angeles-area shelter with severe burns. Shelter workers say he's doing great and loves to purr and give kisses.

Phoenix will be available for adoption soon.
