Governor Brown in San Diego to support Prop 30

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - With just two weeks until the election, Governor Jerry Brown was in San Diego Tuesday to campaign for Prop 30.

The ballot measure would fund schools with a seven-year tax increase on those making over $250,000 a year. It would also raise the sales tax a quarter-cent for four years.

Brown says Prop 30 is the best way to give state schools the funding they need. But opponents say Californians don't need to pay more taxes and lawmakers already have enough money in the budget.

"It is a temporary tax of seven years, but it is directed to a special fund for the schools and community colleges and if we don't get it, the money comes out," Brown said.

Brown says if Prop 30 does not pass, $6 billion in budget cuts will trigger automatically.
