New technology has patients breathing easier

People who suffer from lung diseases are breathing easier these days, thanks to advancements in technology.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - People who suffer from lung diseases are breathing easier these days, thanks to advancements in technology.

In celebration of Respiratory Care Week, UCSD Medical Center is showing off the next generation of medical devices for treating everything from sleep apnea to cystic fibrosis.

A 600-pound iron lung is also on display to show patients how people were treated for polio back in the 1950s.

"Everything that we've seen from technology allows that patient to have a better quality of life, possibly a curative process for their disease, less time in the hospital and less time being readmitted to the hospital," clinical coordinator Suzan Herzig said.

The new devices are easier and more comfortable to use. Some fit on the chest, others on the fingertip.
