Thousands turn out to 'Light The Night Against Crime' 5K

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - More than 3,000 people, including about 1,000 law enforcement personnel, are expected to jog and walk through Balboa Park and surrounding neighborhoods tonight during the 26th annual "Light the Night Against Crime" 5K.

This year, San Diego County Crime Stoppers dedicated the event to the late Christopher Wilson, a veteran San Diego police officer who was gunned down by a fugitive during a shootout at a Skyline- area apartment complex on Oct. 27, 2010.

Participants will also honor San Diego County Sheriff's Sgt. Craig Johnson and Detective Ali Perez who were both wounded in a shootout with a suspected child molester at a Lakeside apartment complex last month.

Members of Wilson's family are scheduled to attend the event, as are San Diego police Chief William Lansdowne and District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis, according to Sally Cox of Crime Stoppers. Undersheriff Ed Prendergast will send the participants off.

Neither Johnson nor Perez will attend, Cox said.
