Auto-theft suspect arrested after police pursuit

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An auto theft suspect led officers on a 40-minute road chase from Encanto to the South Bay Tuesday, dropping off several female passengers en route to the neighborhood where he finally bailed out of the sedan and was arrested.

The pursuit began in the 400 block of 63rd Street about 10:20 a.m., according to San Diego police.

The suspect, who appeared to be in his early to mid-20s, fled to the south and west on city streets, driving so recklessly that officers tailing him in squad cars backed off and let a police helicopter crew take over and track his path from above, SDPD public-affairs Lt. Andra Brown said.

At one point during the chase, a pair of women jumped out of the stolen four-door 1998 Honda Civic and ran off.

Just before 11 a.m., the suspect pulled over in the 1700 block of 16th Street in National City and fled on foot into an apartment complex. Officers took him into custody there a short time later, Brown said.

The suspect's name was not immediately available.
