Sentencing for driver who crashed into home

Posted: Updated:

VISTA (CNS) - A North County man who drove drunk and crashed his pickup truck into an Escondido home, leaving a man seriously injured and his 14-year-old stepdaughter showered with glass, is scheduled to be sentenced Tuesday in a Vista courtroom.

Brandon David Morris, 23, faces up to seven years in prison. He pleaded guilty in May to DUI causing injury and driving under the influence with a blood-alcohol level of .08 percent or higher. The defendant, who has a DUI conviction from March 2011, also admitted multiple victim and great bodily injury allegations.

Prosecutor Laurie Hauf said Morris' blood-alcohol level was measured at .25 percent -- more than three times the legal limit -- after the Feb. 9 crash.

Morris was driving eastbound on Country Club Lane about 7:30 p.m. when his truck struck a curb, ran over an electrical transformer and crashed through the back patio and sliding glass door of the home on Eveningside Glen, said Escondido police Lt. Tom Albergo.

Tony Vidaurri was outside the home and was pinned underneath the pickup, Albergo said. His teenage stepdaughter, who was inside the home, was showered with glass and suffered a scratched cornea, according to her mother.

Firefighters extricated Vidaurri from the wreckage and transported him to a hospital with a lacerated spleen, broken leg, concussion and serious facial injuries. Two other family members inside the home were not injured.
