SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities asked the public Wednesday for help in identifying a thief who chased bank employees through their North Park workplace with a knife during a robbery.

The bandit approached a teller station at the Union Bank branch in the 2900 block of University Avenue shortly after 4 p.m. Tuesday, jumped over the counter and grabbed some currency from near a cash-dispensing machine, the FBI reported.

The man, who was clutching what appeared to be a kitchen knife, then ran after several bank employees as they fled through the lobby.

The robber absconded with the stolen money after a customer threw a chair at him, cutting his right hand, according to San Diego police.

Witnesses described him as a roughly 6-foot, 200-pound white man in his 40s, with a goatee, mustache and gray hair on the sides of his otherwise bald head. He was wearing dark pants, a white tank top with "CALIFORNIA" printed on the front, white socks and tennis shoes.

Anyone who might be able to help investigators identify the robber is asked to call San Diego County Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477. Tipsters may remain anonymous and could be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
