SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Friday was a heartwarming day for dozens of service dogs and people with disabilities.

Canine Companions for Independence hosted a graduation ceremony Friday, as dog trainers passed on the leash to the dogs' new owners.

A new class of puppies were also handed to professional trainers, with hopes of becoming assistance dogs. The puppies will be taught around 50 commands during two years of training.

Outside of the physical tasks, the dogs also provide immeasurable emotional support.

"Huey blew the doors off my heart. And he is going to give me a joyful, amazing life," companion dog recipient Randi Price said.

The program is completely free of charged, and based solely on donations.
