Company donates $250K for winter homeless shelter

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) – The City of San Diego received a big donation Monday that will help fund the winter homeless shelter in Barrio Logan.

United Healthcare presented $250,000 to the city and the San Diego Housing Commission.

The annual cold weather shelter opens this week and will provide warm beds, morning meals, hygiene supplies and supportive services throughout the winter season.

The donation will cover half of the operating costs of the temporary shelter.

"It's a big deal because a lot of, literally hundreds of San Diegans rely on the shelter in the cold winter months to get off the streets and hopefully get off the streets permanently," Councilman Todd Gloria said.

The grand opening of a permanent downtown homeless facility has been delayed until March.
