SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - First there was Black Friday, then Cyber Monday, now you can add Small Business Saturday to this weekend's shopping madness.

At a time when the economy is still struggling to move forward, small business owners now have a designated holiday shopping day, and it's called Small Business Saturday.

Loree Shirazi at Paw Pleasers is cooking up something special for Small Business Saturday this year:

"We're going to be having around the clock specials. So pretty much everything will be on sale at some time on Saturday."

Nearly two out of every three news jobs in America are created by small businesses, which seem to get lost during the holiday season. So in 2010, American Express conceived the idea to create a day between Black Friday and Cyber Monday to honor them. And at Loree's Paw Pleasers boutique in North Park it worked. Last year, her sales skyrocketed – by eight hundred percent.

Because of Loree's success, this year, Peticures by Tess, which shares space in the store, is also offering a Small Business Saturday deal.

And they're not alone, Loree helped organize a North Park wide event, which features at other local stores.

At The Girl Can't Help It, there'll be a special sale rack and 10 percent of all sales that day will go for Hurricane Sandy relief.

"I think it's important to support the businesses that have lost everything," said Gail Higgins with The Girl Can't Help It.

Businesses in the North Park area aren't the only ones pushing Small Business Saturday, News 8 also heard from store owners in Carlsbad, Del Mar, Chula Vista and El Cajon. All of them are taking part, including Phil's BBQ, where if you buy a gift card for $25 or more, you'll receive a free bottle of Phil's sauce.

To promote Saturday's program, American Express is offering $25 statement credits to people who pre-register their American Express card and then spend at least $25 at a small business.
