Man sentenced to life for petty theft ordered freed

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A San Diego man serving life in prison for stealing a leaf blower will soon be a free man.

Sergio Ayala, 55, is being given a second chance after serving 17 years in prison for stealing a $150 leaf blower. The petty theft conviction from 1995 earned him a third strike and 25 years to life.

News 8 spoke to the inmate's family shortly after he was ordered released Thursday under the state's revised Three Strikes law.
