CARLSBAD (CNS) - Utility crews restored electrical service Friday to hundreds of North County homes and businesses left in the dark after an out-of-control sports car smashed into a roadside power pole.

Thousands of addresses initially lost power when the red Ford Mustang crashed at Melrose Drive and Rancho Santa Fe Road in Carlsbad shortly after 5 p.m. Thursday, according to police and San Diego Gas & Electric. No injuries were reported.

Several hours later, nearly 6,000 SDG&E customers in parts of parts of Carlsbad, Rancho Santa Fe, San Marcos and Vista remained without electrical service, according to the utility.

CARLSBAD (CNS) – SDG&E was working to restore full power late Thursday night after thousands of North County residents were left in the dark after a car crashed into a power pole on a Carlsbad street.

The accident happened at Melrose Drive and Rancho Santa Fe Road shortly after 5 p.m., Carlsbad police Lt. Bruce May said. The wreck knocked out electrical service to thousands of homes and businesses in surrounding communities, authorities reported.

The driver lost control of his red Mustang, apparently skidding out on a damp roadway.

One Carlsbad residents told News8 that he drove his son to a nearby tea shop so he could finish his homework. For other residents, the temporary blackout was a rude awakening, leaving families without TV, internet, or appliances around dinner time.

The outage affected parts of Carlsbad, Rancho Santa Fe, San Marcos and Vista. Late Thursday night, about 300 customers still didn't have electricity, but SDG&E expected to have power restored by 6a.m. Friday.

The red Mustang was the only car involved in the wreck. Nobody was injured.
