High speed chase ends in SUV rollover, driver killed by officers

EL CAJON (CNS) - A driver shot to death by a pair of CHP officers who believed he was going for a gun when they contacted him after his vehicle rolled over following a high-speed chase early Sunday has been identified.

The San Diego County Sheriff's Department identified the suspect as 27-year-old Anthony Osorio, a resident of unincorporated Crest.

The chase began at 2:34 a.m. when two CHP officers in a cruiser saw a 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe traveling erratically at a high rate of speed eastbound on Interstate 8 near the El Cajon Boulevard exit and followed, Lt. Glenn Giannantoni of San Diego County Sheriff's Homicide Detail said.

"Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but it failed to yield and a pursuit ensued reaching speeds of 95 mph," Giannantonio said.

The Tahoe exited at Greenfield Drive at 80 mph and a CHP sergeant joined the chase as the Tahoe swerved onto La Cresta Road, Giannantonio said.

"The Tahoe (driver) lost control and rolled once, coming to rest on its wheels," Giannantonio said. "The driver, the only occupant, exited the vehicle and CHP officers ordered him to stop and raise his hands.

"The suspect made movements leading officers to believe he was reaching for a weapon while advancing toward them. Fearing the suspect would shoot, one or more of the officers fired their service weapons at him."

Giannantonio said the suspect was struck by an unknown number of rounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.

No officers were injured and an investigation was continuing.

The identity of the suspect will be confirmed by the Medical Examiner's Office following notification of next of kin.
