Local leaders call for fiscal cliff deal

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Now with four weeks away from going off the fiscal cliff and no deal in Washington, local and state leaders are calling on President Obama and Congress to act.

The San Diego County Board of Supervisors unanimously decided to draft a letter urging Congress and President Obama to set aside partisan politics and stop automatic tax increases including spending cuts which is expected to take effect next month.

According to local Supervisors Greg Cox and Ron Roberts, these cuts would have a significant impact on San Diego County when it comes to the economy, specifically our military community, and would not come close to fixing the federal deficit. However, the cuts would threaten the prosperity of San Diego County.

State Senator Joel Anderson, who spoke with News 8 Wednesday, explained how this fiscal cliff would impact San Diego County:

"They'll be devastating to San Diego. We are a huge military town. We provide a lot of the national defense here and this is a big industry for us, so absolutely it would impact us. But it impacts all Americans."

If Congress fails to reach an agreement to reduce the nation's debt, spending reductions - called sequestration - will take effect January 2.
