Feud escalates: man drives car thru neighbors' home

Posted: Updated:

RANCHO PEÑASQUITOS (CBS 8) – A feud between neighbors escalated Thursday night to a man driving a car through his neighbors' home in a Rancho Peñasquitos neighborhood.

Virgil and Alexia Lopez say their neighbor across the street, 47-year-old Malcolm Cookson, has been involved in a series of disputes with them in the past. The Lopez's also say Cookson suffers from Huntington's Disease, a medical condition that can cause paranoia.

"We knew basically that we were not safe because we were living next door, and he was not well," Alexia Lopez said.

Witnesses say Cookson's wife tried to take the car keys way from her husband before he got behind the wheel, but he succeeded in driving the car straight through the front wall of the house.

The Lopezes were not home at the time of the crash, but their one-year-old son was inside, being cared for by his grandmother. Neither was injured in the crash.

The Lopezes claim the crash is just the latest in a series of hostile acts carried out by Cookson since last July.

"He slashed our tires, threw oil in our driveway, keyed our car, slammed on our doors and windows, left us notes in the middle of the night," Alexia Lopez says. "Many different things and we've contacted police every time."

The frustrated couple says they finally filed a restraining order against Cookson.

The car was still lodged in the house Thursday night. The family is waiting for a structural engineer to inspect the home before they remove the vehicle, for fear of causing more damage.

Police say Cookson was taken into custody for a mental evaluation.
