Volunteers and Girl Scouts repair lily pond planter boxes

Four months ago, a rowdy water fight tore up Balboa Park's world famous lily pond. Planter boxes were destroyed, plants were trampled and piping was broken.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Four months ago, a rowdy water fight tore up Balboa Park's world famous lily pond. Planter boxes were destroyed, plants were trampled and piping was broken.

Saturday, volunteers, including Girl Scouts, gathered to repair the damage.

Back on August 11th, the historic Balboa Park lily pond was overrun by dozens of water gun toting revelers who left the landmark in shambles.

The incident sparked outrage from the public, who couldn't believe the treasure was trashed and not respected.

Now, thanks to local Girl Scout troops, donations of materials and labor from Lowe's Home Improvement stores and public monetary gifts, more than two dozen planter boxes damaged or destroyed by the melee are getting rebuilt and replaced in the water.

The project is being done now while the lilies are in their dormant stage until next May.

The pond is scheduled to be drained on January 17th, and then the real work to get it back to what it was is set to get underway.

To help fix one of the crown jewels of San Diego, public donations to the non-profit friends of Balboa Park topped $13,000.
