SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The two people slain during Tuesday's shooting rampage at a mall near Portland, Ore., attended schools in the San Diego area decades ago, local campus officials confirmed Wednesday.
Steven Forsyth, 45, was an undergraduate student at the University of San Diego between 1985 and 1989, studying business and political science, according to USD's public affairs office.
Cindy Yuille, 54, whose maiden name was Waddell, graduated from Grossmont High School in El Cajon in 1976. Before moving to the Pacific Northwest, Yuille earned a nursing degree from San Diego State University, the Oregonian newspaper reported.
A third victim, Kristina Shevchenko, 15, survived the attack at Clackamas Town Center shopping plaza and was listed in serious condition, Clackamas County sheriff's officials said.
Forsyth, Yuille and the girl were shot by a lone gunman, identified as 22-year-old Jacob Tyler Roberts of Portland, who opened fire with a stolen AR-15 semi-automatic rifle in the crowded mall shortly before 3:30 p.m.
About 20 minutes later, police found Roberts dead of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound near a JC Penney store.
Investigators have not established a motive for the rampage, though it appeared that there was no prior relationship between the suspect and the victims, sheriff's officials said.
Forsyth was a youth sports coach who owned a business in the shopping center, friends told reporters. Yuille was a hospice nurse for Kaiser Permanente in Portland.
