Bird enthusiasts take advantage of the rain

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - San Diego's bird enthusiasts took advantage of Thursday's rain to catch a glimpse of many species they wouldn't normally be able to see.

The amount of water around the county caused the different types of birds to look for new shelter.

"With the high tide the water forces birds like clapper rail and belding savannah sparrow out of their hiding places in the marsh. Right now the marsh is inundated and flooded, so those kinds of birds, the rails and sparrows and shore birds, are in plain view and we are able to look at them," bird watcher Claude Edwards said.

The bird watchers told News 8 they spotted upwards of 17 species of birds Thursday.
