Local group sponsors "Gift Cards for Guns" exchange

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The school massacre has raised new questions about gun safety.

Now, a local group is trying to get guns off our streets by exchanging gift cards for the weapons, no questions asked.

This event was planned well before the shooting in Connecticut. But the timing is sure to have an effect on the program, which is now in its fifth year.

382 guns were taken off the streets of San Diego in one morning last year. This Friday, the "Gift Cards for Guns" exchange is back.

Robert Robinson says the group isn't trying to send a message about gun control, it just wants to give people who want to get rid of guns a safe way to do it.

The money will be in the form of gift cards for local grocery stores. $50 will be given for shotguns and rifles, $100 for handguns and automatic weapons.

There is one catch, the guns have to work.

The gun exchange is the brainchild of the United African American Ministerial Action Council, this will be their fifth year of hosting the event, which immediately paid dividends.

They started the program after two local high school students, Monique Palmer and Michael Taylor were gunned down in this Valencia Park area while walking home from a party.

And the shooting in Connecticut serves as a reminder that the program is still needed.

In fact Saturday, in Oakland a similar program was held with people lining up for hours before it started. And now, 600 guns are off the streets.

The gun exchange is this Friday, starting at 8:30 a.m. It's at the U.A.A.M.A.C. Headquarters at 415 North Euclid Avenue.

There is a limit of one gift card per vehicle, no matter how many guns are turned in.

The organizers of Friday's gun exchange are hoping for donations to help them buy more gift cards.
