SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - San Diegans have seen the pictures from Newtown and wondered how they can help. Sunday, a North County resident, who knows Newtown very well, has a suggestion.
Rachel Lopes-Ross just moved here earlier this year from Newtown. Sunday, she shared her story with News 8's Steve Price.
Rachel Lopes-Ross graduated from Newtown High and lived in the town almost her entire life.
She moved to Carlsbad in May, but Friday morning around 7:30 she started getting texts from family and friends about a possible shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary. It is a feeling she describes as shocking and surreal.
Rachel worked with Mary Sherlach on multiple occasions, the school psychologist was among those killed trying to save students.
Rachel says feels guilty that she's not there, but she is helping from 3,000 miles away by informing others about the United Way's Sandy Hook School Support fund. Money raised will go for much needed counseling.
Rachel is heading back to Newtown on Friday for a trip she planned before the shooting. But what was supposed to be a happy holiday homecoming, will now be filled with hugs and tears.
