Local company donates 126,000 pounds of beans to San Diego Food Bank
SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Just in time for the holidays, an Oceanside-based food supplier has donated three semi truckloads of garbanzo beans to the San Diego Food Bank.
PIA Ingredients delivered 126,000 pounds of beans to the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank Thursday. The food bank helps feed 350,000 people every month, and organizers say the donation will ensure families are receiving healthy food items.
"With these garbanzo beans, we plan to provide recipe cards so they can make hummus, so they can make garbanzo bean salad and so we're really trying to make sure that they utilize the product and that they're able to provide those to their families," Vanessa Franco of the San Diego Food Bank said.
The food bank also held a cooking demonstration for the kitchen staffs of local homeless shelters and soup kitchens to show how the beans can be used in low-cost and healthy recipes.
