Man taken into custody after threatening to jump from bridge over SR-163

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man was in custody Friday after he threatened to jump from the Cabrillo Bridge, prompting officials to temporarily close state Route 163, hours after a similar threat shut down part of Interstate 805.

Just before 4:30 p.m., a man was reported on the bridge in Balboa Park that extends over state Route 163, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The San Diego Police Department's emergency negotiating team was called out and contacted the man, San Diego police Officer Dino Delimitros said.

State Route 163 was closed in both directions along with the transition from northbound Interstate 5 until shortly after the man was taken into custody around 5:30 p.m., according to the CHP and San Diego police.

Delimitros said the man would likely be taken to the county's Mental Health Services for an evaluation.

The incident came hours after another man threatened to jump from the 43rd Street overpass of Interstate 805, prompting a nearly six-hour closure of some freeway lanes before he was taken into custody.

That man was spotted sitting on the overpass with his feet dangling around 7:45 a.m. and the San Diego Police Department's emergency negotiating team was brought in, according to San Diego police Officer Frank Cali.

The northbound Interstate 805 lanes and on-ramps from Plaza Boulevard and Sweetwater Road were initially shut down and southbound lanes and a connector from state Route 15 were closed later.

Police took him into custody shortly after 2 p.m. and turned him over to California Highway Patrol officers, Cali said. It was unclear if he would be taken to the county's Mental Health Services for an evaluation, or would face charges.
