IPad thieves hit another local elementary school

Posted: Updated:

ENCINITAS (CNS) - Thieves broke into a classroom at an Encinitas-area elementary school and stole a dozen iPads early Monday in the second such burglary in two days, authorities said.

A burglary alarm at Ada Harris Elementary School at 1508 Windsor Road was tripped at 2:12 a.m., according to San Diego County sheriff's Lt. Kevin Menzies.

An alarm also went off at Cardiff Elementary School at 1888 Montgomery Ave. at 3:10 a.m. Sunday, Menzies said. A dozen iPads were taken in a hit similar to this morning's burglary, he said.

While investigating the burglary at Cardiff Elementary, deputies discovered the school's perimeter fence "had been compromised" and that two classrooms had broken windows, according to a sheriff's department statement.

"The suspects entered one of the classrooms, broke off the lock on a storage cabinet and stole a dozen iPad tablets," sheriff's Sgt. Joe Passalacqua said in a statement Sunday.

The total loss from both burglaries was estimated at more than $12,000.
