Kansas dog found in San Diego to be returned to owners

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The holiday vacation to San Diego is coming to an end for Rascal, the Jack Russell terrier mix that disappeared from a Kansas neighborhood Thanksgiving weekend, but how he got here remains a mystery.

Rascal, just over a year old, is owned by a couple that lives in Oswego, Kan., more then 1,500 miles away, according to the county's Department of Animal Services.

His owners received a call three weeks ago that the dog had been found, but he disappeared again.

A woman brought Rascal to the animal shelter in Mission Valley on Monday, and department employees contacted the owners using information on his tags, according to the county. Rascal does not have a microchip.

"It was very easy for (Animal Services) to contact the owner and work out the arrangements to get Rascal home. We do this on a regular basis," Animal Services Deputy Director Dan DeSousa said. "The Foundation for the Care of Indigent Animals agreed to cover the cost of flying the dog back."

DeSousa said he plans to take Rascal to the airport on Saturday, and the canine will fly to Tulsa, Okla., the nearest airport to Oswego at about two hours by car.

He said the reunification of Rascal with his owners wouldn't happen if he didn't still have his tags.
