SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - It's food that's healthy and wholesome and best enjoyed from a bowl on the floor. It's a gourmet meal found in the East Village.
When it comes to a tasty natural whole foods diet, Lucy Postins really knows her way around a commercial kitchen.
"I quite like the fruits, the cranberries and diced papaya here," she said.
Mixing and matching the freshest ingredients at The Honest Kitchen, Lucy has come up with a savvy formula for savory success.
"These are our nuzzles. There are duck and cherry treats," explained Lucy. "They taste a little bit like grape nuts."
All of the products on Lucy's table are fit for consumption.
"The colors in our raw ingredients, the natural pigments are really antioxidants and they have a tremendous effect in terms of benefitting total health," continued Lucy.
But none of them are designed with humans in mind. Just add water to these dehydrated delicacies and your mutt can be macking like a millionaire on free range chicken, cage free turkey, or wild line caught Icelandic Haddock.
"We see the effects of the dogs and cats that eat our food in terms of much shinier coats, healthier skin," Lucy noted.
The Honest Kitchen's products for dogs and cats are now sold in nearly 3,000 locations nationwide.
"We think of kibble and canned food and things as the equivalent of a fast food or a junk food diet," Lucy said.
The East Village offices of The Honest Kitchen are filled with furry examples of their most faithful and contented clients.
"It's really amazing how many of these chronic health problems, like skin and coat allergies, ear infections and gastro-intestinal problems are related directly to the food the animals eat," said Lucy.
