SDSU drill provides tools to deal with campus shooting

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Staff members at SDSU are taking part in a training exercise to prepare them if there is ever an armed person on campus.

School administrators, safety personnel and even students took part in Tuesday's training.

Organizers say the exercise gives participants the mental and physical tools to handle violent intruder and active shooter situations.

"This concept is about giving people options. Escape if they can, if they have to fight, if they have to provide distractions -- anything they can do to avoid becoming a victim of an active shooter," Kerry Harris of Response Options said.

San Diego State has offered this type of training free to students, faculty and staff since 2008.
