EL CAJON (CNS) - One or more thieves broke into an East County gas station early Friday and stole an ATM, but wound up dumping it miles away after being unable to pry it open.
A surveillance camera captured images of a light-colored SUV similar to a Jeep Cherokee backing through glass front doors of the business in the 1000 block of West Main Street in El Cajon about 4 a.m., police Lt. Mike Moulton said.
About an hour later, a passer-by found the cash machine abandoned alongside Navajo Road in the Lake Murray area of eastern San Diego. It appeared that someone had tried in vain to break the ATM open, the lieutenant said.
