OCEAN BEACH (CBS 8) - A Chihuahua puppy is healing after falling 80-feet from the top of a cliff in Ocean Beach.

County Animal Services says the pup is being given antibiotics and painkillers at an emergency veterinary hospital.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Good Samaritans and San Diego lifeguards came to the aid of a small puppy Friday after it fell 80 feet off a cliff in Ocean Beach.

It happened just before 2 p.m. at the foot of Ladera Street. Witnesses tell News 8 the puppy's owners were walking the dog without a leash when it got too close to the edge and fell. The puppy's owners then ran off.

People who saw what happened immediately flagged down lifeguards.

"We followed them to the spot and looked over the edge and sure enough this little guy was lying on the beach there. And we couldn't tell if he was dead or alive, but he lifted his head and that was good news there," Sgt. David Rains said.

Lifeguards took the injured puppy to headquarters and waited for animal control to arrive. A San Diego police officer on patrol in the area decided to drive the dog to the animal control facility on Gaines Street.
