Filner says Chargers will stay in San Diego

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) – Among the various topics Mayor Bob Filner discussed during his first "State of the City" address, he announced that the Chargers will not be exercising their right to leave San Diego in 2013.

Filner said that the team will not be applying to relocate next season, but he did not address the Chargers' desire to build a new stadium in San Diego.

San Diego's newly-elected mayor also outlined his vision for tackling a variety of problems the city faces and will face in the future.

Among them, Filner promised to address the city's homeless crisis, to put solar panels on city buildings, to address climate change threats, and to improve the city's transportation and infrastructure. That included specifically calling for a Trolley and light-rail connection to San Diego International Airport that creates direct access to the airport from Interstate-5 without relying on surface streets.

He also pledged to upgrade the communications infrastructure that first responders rely on, and streamline communications between city and county response agencies.

Filner also announced that he would also have an open door policy for any San Diegan who wants an audience with the mayor. He said he would be available in the lobby of City Hall on the first Saturday of every month, starting February 2nd, from 9:30a.m. to noon to talk to residents.
