Firefighters battle large house fire

Posted: Updated:

ESCONDIDO (CBS 8) - A family has been forced out of their home after a fast moving fire in Escondido early Wednesday morning.

Flames ignited in a home on W 15th Avenue around 3:00 a.m. and quickly moved into the attic and then broke through the roof of the house.

Fire crews initially battled the blaze from outside the structure, because they thought the roof was going to collapse. When it was safe, firefighters went inside and contained the flames.

The mother, who is eight months pregnant, called 911 and told dispatchers she smelled smoke. She explained the scene inside the home when the fire started to News 8:

"When you wake up like that you lose your senses in a way. You're heightened in one way and you're not thinking in another. So for a few minutes I kinda ran around the house not knowing what to do. So I'm so thankful that we got it together and got all the kids out."

The family of five plus two dogs had to evacuate. They were not injured during the fire and are now receiving help from the Red Cross.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
