Rooftop standoff with alleged burglar ends in L.A.

Posted: Updated:

LOS ANGELES (CBS 8) - A suspected burglar held police at bay for nearly five hours Friday on top of the roof of a home before climbing down and surrendering in East Los Angeles.

The standoff began at about 7 a.m. Friday when a bail bondsman showed up at the suspect's house. The man refused to come outside and deputies were called to the scene and discovered he was wanted in connection with at least two different burglaries.

The 37-year-old man, identified as Michael Vargas, apparently climbed on top of a chimney to avoid being arrested. He was seen on the rooftop wearing only a pair of shorts and socks.

According to CBS Los Angeles, the man eventually climbed down from the chimney, which was located at the home of his girlfriend's parents.
