From child star to jail: The voice of 'Charlie Brown'

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - News 8 talked exclusively with Peter Robbins after his arrest for felony criminal threats and stalking charges.

On Wednesday, the 56-year-old Oceanside resident pleaded not guilty to accusations that he threatened his girlfriend and the doctor who performed her breast enhancement surgery.

Robbins is being held on $550,000 bail and faces up to nine years in prison if he is convicted on all counts.

Our Phil Blauer met Robbins more than 20 years ago in Palm Springs, and they became professional colleagues and friends. From jail, Robbins called News 8 and asked Phil to talk with him about the allegations.

"Here's what happened to me Phil -- a girl broke my heart. That's what this is all about," Robbins said.

You could almost hear Charlie Brown's lament coming from the talent which gave the "Peanuts" cartoon character his unforgettable voice 47 years ago.

"It happens to everybody. It happened to me," Robbins said.

Robbins faces serious prison time for allegedly making criminal threats and stalking his 33-year-old ex-girlfriend Shawna Kern and La Jolla plastic surgeon Dr. Lori Saltz, who performed a $6,500 breast augmentation surgery on Kern, which was paid for by him.

"I wanted to have a baby with a girl. I have a shady past… when she stopped doing meth, I stopped drinking. I thought maybe there was a future for us. Turns out she wanted to get a boob job, steal my car, steal my dog Snoopy and get back to making love to her old boyfriend," Robbins said.

Robbins was arrested Sunday night coming back into the U.S. from Mexico on an arrest warrant based on violent threats against Dr. Saltz. He allegedly left a note on her office door expressing outrage over the results from Kern's procedure.

"There's no way I would act out on anything. I do not know how to break someone in half, nor would I attempt to," he said.

Prosecutors also say Robbins left several threatening phone messages for Shawna Kern, saying in one, "You better hide Shawna, I'm coming for you."

"Well I was in Mexico and called her up and said, 'Guess what Shawna, I'm outside your window.' I'm in Mexico, she saw it was an international call," he explained.

Following what he calls a nervous breakdown, Robbins is offering olive branches to his alleged victims.

"I apologize to Dr. Laurie Saltz. I tried to prove a point, I did it badly. I apologize to Shawna Kern for making her break my heart. I don't know, maybe you could get her explanation," he said.

When asked whether or not he was suffering from pancreatic cancer -- something he mentioned to both women -- he offered an explanation.

"I made it up, I don't have cancer. I wanted to live though, like I did have cancer, like Lance Armstrong. How would you fight it?" Robbins said.

And what about a message for the millions of people, young and old, who grew to love the hapless little boy with the single whispy curl over all these decades?

"I love my fans," he said.

Peter Robbins will be back in court Monday for a bail review hearing. His preliminary hearing is set for March 22.
