Man injured in officer-involved shooting in Mira Mesa

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A male was shot by an officer and suffered a non-life-threatening wound after police responded to a domestic violence call in San Diego's Mira Mesa neighborhood, police said Saturday.

Officers were dispatched to the 8800 block of Scorpius Way around 8:40 p.m. Friday after a woman called 911 to report she had been attacked by her husband, who threatened to attack responding officers so they would shoot him, said San Diego police officer Mike Cali.

When officers arrived, the suspect walked into the street holding an object, but because of low light it could not be determined what was in his hand, Cali said.

The officers ordered him to drop the object, but he instead raised it over his head while uttering threats, Cali said.

One officer fired a stun gun at the suspect, but it did not appear to have an effect on the man, who advanced on the officers in a threatening manner, Cali said.

A second officer fired his service weapon at the suspect, striking him, at which point the male dropped what turned out to be a rock, Cali said.

The suspect was taken to a hospital for treatment of a wound that is not considered life-threatening, Cali said.

No officers were injured, he said.

The officer who fired on the suspect is a 12-year veteran of the department, Cali said.

San Diego police homicide detectives were investigating the shooting, he said.
