SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - It was a whale watcher's dream. A huge pod of gray whales spotted off the San Diego coast earlier this week may just be the largest ever seen in Southern California.

It's an amazing sight Melissa Galety and her co-workers at San Diego Whale Watch have never seen.

A pod of gray whales, an estimated 20 to 25 of them were spotted five miles off the coast. The discovery was made Monday during an afternoon excursion aboard the Privateer tour boat.

While the crew and passengers were indeed lucky, they weren't the only ones who got to take part in such a unique experience.

Gerry Mobley and his wife Deonne sent News 8 photos they took aboard the Dolphin on the exact same day.

The couple, visiting from Oklahoma City, planned on going whale watching Sunday. But a flight delay pushed their plans back to Monday, which turned out to be a blessing in disguise.

We showed Birch Aquarium Executive Director Nigella Hillgarth the jaw dropping video and even she was perplexed.

Hillgarth says, it is normal to see lots of whales between now and March as they migrate to Baja for breeding season.

Scientists will likely review the video for research purposes.

Whatever the reason they come up with, this video has no doubt generated a buzz, especially among those who on Saturday were hoping to see the same.
