San Diego Latino GOP hopeful immigration bill will pass

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Local Republican Latino leaders are encouraged by the proposed legislation. The San Diego County Latino GOP discussed the bill at their meeting Monday night.

The group's founder Dolores Chavez-Harmes says she is hopeful the bipartisan effort will pass, and cited how important winning the Latino vote has become to both parties.

"We've been trying to address immigration but the Democrats haven't been wanting to address immigration for a long time because it works to their benefit if they don't and they'd rather leave the immigration issue on the table as a talking point and as a divisive issue for the next 2014 and 2016 elections," she says.

Chavez-Harmes also pointed out that in the 2012 election, her group vetted several candidates and endorsed only two. Those candidates are the only ones on the Republican ticket that won countywide.
