Serious accident sends four family members to hospital

CARLSBAD (CBS 8) - A woman, her mother and two children are hospitalized after a violent car crash in Carlsbad.

Witnesses say a silver SUV heading eastbound on Palomar Airport Road, near Innovation Way, slammed into a blue Honda Civic that had run a red light just after 7:15 p.m. Wednesday.

The SUV T-boned the car and then spun out. A grandmother was driving the Civic with her daughter in the passenger seat, an 18-month-old and two-year-old were in car seats in the back.

After the collision, witnesses rushed in to try to help the family.

"The little baby was just screaming and crying, and I didn't want to get in the way of the emergency crews, so I just tried to soothe her as much as I could. But that side of the car was smashed in," said Wendi Schnabel who witnessed the accident.

The two children were airlifted to Children's Hospital, one with a possible head injury. The two adults were taken to Scripps La Jolla. As of this report, there is no word on their conditions.

The driver of the SUV was not injured.
