Fire breaks out at Mira Mesa asphalt plant

A fire broke out at an asphalt plant in the Mira Mesa area Friday.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A fire at a Mira Mesa construction-materials processing plant sent a thick column of smoke into the air Friday afternoon until crews could quell the flames.

The blaze started at about 3:30 pm. at Vulcan Materials in the 10000 block of Black Mountain Road.

About 25 firefighters and five fire engines were called in to help bring the fire under control.

Crews managed to extinguish the fire in about 20 minutes.

Maurice Luque of the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department said a hazmat crew did not need to be called in.

There were no reports of injuries.

Investigators were working to determine what sparked the blaze, which began inside the second level of a structure and spread outside.
