Teen jailed following fiery vandalism spree at day-care center

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8 / CNS) - A 14-year-old was arrested Tuesday in connection to the vandalism and arson of a daycare center in Sorrento Valley.

A security guard at a nearby building reported the non-injury arson blazes at La Jolla Children's Learning Lab in the 10000 block of Pacific Heights Boulevard about 3 a.m., according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

It took crews only a few minutes to douse the flames, which burned a plastic storage shed next to the center along with several other sections of exterior wall and parts of an adjacent playground, SDFRD spokesman Maurice Luque said.

In addition to starting the fires, the vandal or vandals discharged a chemical fire extinguisher in a kitchen area and several other rooms; painted graffiti on walls, doors and toys; turned on stove-top burners and left them ignited; and threw a chair through a window, possibly as a means of getting inside.

Nothing was stolen, though there were computers and other valuables inside the business at the time of the destructive rampage.

Later Tuesday, San Diego police arrested the teenage suspect and took him to juvenile hall for booking, Luque said. His name was withheld because he is a minor. Fire officials say the boy admitted to starting five small fires and also admitted to starting another fire at a day care center in Mira Mesa last week. He's now in juvenile hall.

Investigators determined that the blazes were intentionally ignited and put the fire damages at $10,000, with the rest of the losses set at $60,000.

There were no known witnesses to the crimes, the fire department spokesman said.
