SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Patrol officers searching for a South Bay resident Tuesday found a body believed to be that of the missing man next to the San Diego River in Mission Valley.

Chula Vista police contacted their San Diego counterparts about 7:30 a.m. to request assistance in following up on a lead in the missing person case, SDPD Lt. Jorge Duran said.

About two hours later, San Diego police found the dead man in a shrubbery-covered area near a riverbed homeless camp south of Fashion Valley mall.

Homicide detectives investigated the scene and found no signs that the man had been slain, according to Duran.

"That may change once the autopsy is done," the lieutenant said.

The county Medical Examiner's Office will identify the man and determine his cause of death.

Chula Vista police had begun looking for him around the river on Monday, suspending the search when darkness fell, Duran said.
