SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - According to the American Heart Association, one woman dies from heart disease every minute.

On Friday, the nonprofit organization hosted its annual Go Red for Women Luncheon in La Jolla to raise awareness about this silent killer.

Our very own Barbara-Lee Edwards emceed Friday's special event at the Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines grand ballroom. A sold-out crowd of 650 people showed up to watch a special fashion show by Zandra Rhodes, and to learn more about the dangers of heart disease.

"In fact, heart disease kills more women each year than all forms of cancer combined. So what we're trying to do with events like today, The Go Red For Women Luncheon, is to really raise that awareness for women. So that they understand that they are at risk. To understand signs, symptoms and to understand how they can prevent heart disease for themselves and their loved ones," Lisa Murphy of the Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center at UCSD.

Organizers hoped to raise more than $400,000 for heart disease research in San Diego.
