Boy's family apologizes for school shooting threat

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The family of a Poway student who authorities say threatened to shoot a teacher and classmates is apologizing.

The 12-year-old was taken into custody over the weekend, accused of sending an e-mail to the principal of Twin Peaks Middle School claiming to have ammunition and guns.

In a statement issued through the boy's attorney, the family says he had no intention or ability to carry out the threat.

They say he is dealing with emotional problems and coping with one parent's battle with cancer.

Part of the statement reads, "the family is profoundly sorry, and will do all within its power to assure the minor has continuing mental health treatment."
