An Internet webcam installed atop the condemned lifeguard tower at the Children's Pool in La Jolla has been added to the mayor's website and will be streamed on CityTV, San Diego Mayor Bob Filner announced Thursday.
LA JOLLA (CBS 8) - Police have increased patrols in La Jolla after a controversial web cam overlooking the Children's Pool captured some disturbing activity.
The new seal cam, unveiled by San Diego Mayor Bob Filner just weeks ago, is intended to give people around the world a chance to watch the creatures at the popular tourist attraction.
But in addition to capturing the seals swimming, sleeping, and frolicking, the cameras caught two young women harassing the animals earlier this week.
"Sitting on them, pulling their flippers, kicking them, flashing lights in their faces -- until each and every one of them is driven off the beach," said Larry Wan, founder and Chariman of the Western Alliance for Nature.
It is not illegal to be on the public beach, but harassing the seals is against the law.
The Western Alliance for Nature says that its web cam, on average, gets more than 1,000 viewers everyday from as far away as Russia and Iran.
