4 injured in multi-vehicle crash in Pacific Beach

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A suspected drunken driver ran a red light at a Pacific Beach intersection and caused a four-vehicle crash that sent three others to a hospital, one with a critical head injury, San Diego police said.

The 26-year-old driver of a northbound Nissan Titan -- who is in custody -- was speeding into the intersection of Mission Bay Drive and Garnet Avenue about 9:45 a.m. and collided with an eastbound Honda Accord and a Volvo, according to San Diego police Officer Frank Cali.

The crash sent the Honda across the center divide and into a minivan, Cali said.

The Honda's driver, a 66-year-old man, was hospitalized with a critical head injury sustained in the crash, Cali said.

The Volvo's occupants, a 30-year-old woman and a 5-year-old boy, received minor injuries and were treated at a hospital, Cali said. The minivan's occupants complained of pain, but were not hospitalized.

The Nissan's driver was treated at a hospital for a minor injury before he was booked into jail on suspicion of felony drunken driving, Cali said.

Most of the intersection between the two major arteries was closed following the crash, California Highway Patrol officials said.

Traffic backed up onto southbound Interstate 5, and a SigAlert was issued shortly before noon as traffic backed up to state Route 52, the CHP said.

The alert was canceled and lanes were reported open at 2:30 p.m.
