San Diego sheriff says violence has to stop

SAN DIEGO (AP) — San Diego Sheriff Bill Gore says common sense must be used to deal with this country's mental health care and background checks on guns.

Gore's comments came just hours after two deputies were shot during a confrontation with a person he described as mentally disturbed. That 22-year-old man died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Gore says he is tired of driving to a hospital not knowing if his deputy is going to live or die. He says there is no quick fix and no one solution. He says it will take several steps to make it safer for deputies and the public.

The deputies shot Thursday should survive. Two others survived a shooting in September. But two lawmen in Southern California were buried in the last week after being gunned down.
