Naval Base Coronado hosts Silver Strand Beach clean-up

Posted: Updated:

CORONADO (CBS 8) - Sailors from Naval Base Coronado and other volunteers spent the day cleaning up a portion of the Silver Strand to help protect endangered birds that call the area home.

Each year, the base hosts the beach clean-up to pick up any trash along the stretch of the Silver Strand that the military uses for training. The Navy makes sure the event takes place before the least tern and western snowy plover arrive to nest along the strand.

"It's important to them that it's clean and that's always kind of refreshing to hear that everybody has some connection to our shoreline. And they feel a responsibility to keep it clear. And a lot things they're finding aren't from here and we know that, they're from inland and offshore. And they're doing their part to get rid of it," Mallory Watson of San Diego Coastkeeper said.

The endangered birds nest along that stretch of beach from March to September.
