Safety cones up to protect Silver Strand sand dunes

Posted: Updated:

CORONADO (CBS 8) - Crews from Naval Base Coronado have placed safety cones along Silver Strand to protect the area's sand dunes.

It's all part of a dune restoration project that will improve the habitat for two native birds, the California least tern and the western snowly plover.

The project includes removal of non-native plants and replacing them with native plant species.

A temporary irrigation system has also been installed to help plant growth.
