Alleged cop shooter wounded in jail stabbing

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man facing the possibility of life in prison for allegedly opening fire on two sheriff's deputies, seriously wounding them, at his Lakeside apartment five months ago was recovering Tuesday from stab wounds he suffered last weekend in a jail assault.

Daniel Robert Witczak, 30, suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the attack, which occurred Saturday evening, sheriff's spokeswoman Jan Caldwell said.

Witczak was assaulted with some type of "sharp object," according to Caldwell.

"Inasmuch as there is an ongoing investigation, I am unable to say anything further," she said.

Witczak allegedly shot sheriff's Sgt. Craig Johnson and Detective Ali Perez with a high-powered rifle early on the afternoon of Sept. 25 when they went to his residence to investigate an accusation that he had molested his girlfriend's elementary school-age daughters.

He faces three counts of attempted murder of a peace officer -- the third charge involves a California Highway Patrol officer who also was involved in the shootout but avoided injury -- along with eight counts stemming from the alleged sexual assaults on the 6- and 8-year-old girls.

The child-molestation charges, filed in November, added a potential 100 years to the 87 years to life in prison the defendant already was facing if convicted, according to prosecutors.

Witczak, who is being held without bail, is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on March 21.
