SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Quick work by San Diego lifeguards helped save the life of a 62-year-old surfer at La Jolla Shores Tuesday.
Around noon, a lifeguard spotted a surfer floating face-down in the water. Rescue crews swam out to the man and dragged him onto the sand, where they performed CPR and shocked him with a defibrillator.
After a few minutes, he began breathing again and regained consciousness.
"To get from that level where you see him with the head back, looking like a dire situation, to five minutes later in the ambulance asking us what happened, it's just amazing," a lifeguard said.
Lifeguards aren't sure what caused the man to lose consciousness. He was taken to Scripps La Jolla and is expected to recover.
