SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - They have been the pride and joy of Santa Ysabel for decades.
Now, Dudley's Famous Bakery is celebrating 50 years of making some of the most delicious bread and baked goods anywhere.
To survive 50 years in the bread business, you have to be doing something right, otherwise -- you'd be toast.
Fifty years of love baked into every loaf.
"It's homemade and it's just good," said a customer.
Baker Dudley Pratt opened his store in what seemed at the time to be the middle of nowhere. But hidden in this quiet corner of Santa Ysabel was a secret.
"Came up here...fresh, sweet water. Higher elevation. Easier to bake bread at a higher elevation when you know the tricks," said Dudley's President Barry Brunye.
Date nut raisin is the most popular. But with 24 to choose from, it's hard to pick just one favorite.
Over the years, Dudley's has grown, expanding to include a deli and desserts.
The long line at Dudley's is well deserved.
"You can't go by here without stopping," said another customer.
But that doesn't mean the bakery has always been rolling in the dough. A sluggish economy, combined with high gas prices, kept customers away.
So Dudley's came closer to home.
"Working with the groceries in the San Diego market - Albertsons, Sprouts, Jonathans and so forth - have brought our breads in and doing quite well with it," said Brunye.
But there is still something special about making the trip -- to a spot where a piece of bread is a slice of heaven.
Dudley's uses no artificial preservatives in their bread, so it has a shelf life of seven days.
